2020 is a four-alarm dumpster fire. The United States is ablaze, and it has plenty of fuel to keep it going.
It burns because of the mass death and suffering caused by the COVID 19 pandemic. It is repeatedly doused with the inflammatory rhetoric of a president known for his divisiveness who is fighting to win reelection at all costs. That fire is also bellowed by the constant reminder that institutional and structural racism continue to perpetuate what Geographer Ruthie Gilmore (Prof. CUNY Graduate Center) calls the “state-sanctioned or extralegal production and exploitation of group-differentiated vulnerability to premature death.” What this means is that group differentiation by racial and ethnic otherness create differentials of the value of human beings based on their identities. Like dollars and euros versus pesos, rupees, or dinars, in the United States, some lives are worth more and other lives are worth little, especially in the eyes of white electoral majorities and the governments and laws they put in place.
That value differential makes the lives of black people—including Black Latinxs—, indigenous people, and brown people “not matter,” particularly when they are victims of racist profiling and disproportionate use of force and homicide by police and by civilians acting as law enforcement or reporting people to the police (there is an abundance of data validating this. In light of recent events targeting black people such as the killing of Ahmaud Arbery by a retired police officer and his son in Georgia, the shooting death of, Breonna Taylor by Louisville Police, the racist false accusations of Christian Cooper by a white woman in Central Park, the killing of Tony McDade by Tallahassee police, and the live-camera fatal asphyxiation of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police, write a discussion post that notes how these events make you feel about the present and future of racism in the United States, particularly in light of what you’ve learned in this class about culture and power? How is culture a part of these injustices and how is it also a necessary part of our collective effort to definitively end those unjust institutional practices and social forces?
In order to further stimulate some thought about these things, I’m adding the following resources for you to check out. Whatever you write, please, please, please: keep it honest but constructive and respectful. And also, if you are going to refute anything, refer to the course readings and these articles in a coherent and engaged way. Don’t just write a reflection saying: “well I don’t think that police are racist because that’s never happened to me or the people I hang out with.” Weigh the evidence we have presented before you and write about it critically. And don’t forget about culture!

Through the years, Racism haS been a major issue that is continuously increasing up to this day. Many protests and movements have been awakened to address racial profiling. However, despite the countless efforts of people behind these, Racism may not simply end that easily.
