Equal rights among humans are one of the most controversial topics today that takes different forms based on the geographical location. In particular, it refers to the concept where all individuals are handled in the same way by the law, the government, individuals, and organizations regardless of their differences in culture, race, skin color, social class, gender, religion, and ethnicity. The issue of equal rights remains an open and unresolved problem in the world today. Even after almost all nations got independence, some people feel that their rights and privileges are not exercised entirely. For example, African Americans and other minority groups in the United States of America (USA) perceive as if the dominant culture of white individuals are prioritized in everything. Similarly, communities living in abject poverty in Africa feel as if they have been neglected by the law and government since they are not provided basic needs. The topic of equal rights remains an open and unaddressed issue that affects people in different cultures in the world today.
If the subject of equal rights is no longer an issue in the USA, black people should not be discriminated against in various aspects of their lives. Almost every African American residing in the USA has experienced segregation either directly or indirectly. Racism is the primary problem that black individuals come across almost every day. In the last few decades, African Americans have reported various incidents of police brutality, unnecessary seizures and searches, and killings of innocent black men. In most cases, African Americans are pushed to the ghettos by their white counterparts who do not like living with them in the same neighborhoods. These individuals cannot walk in some places without being stopped and frisked by police officers even if they are not criminal suspects. Others are shot and killed by law enforcers without a solid reason. For example, in February 2012, a boy aged 17 years by the name Trayvon Martin, was shot by a police officer, George Zimmerman, and died on the spot in Sanford, Florida. Martin was returning home from his aunt’s place, and he was unarmed. In 1857, Roger Taney, the chief justice of the USA Supreme Court, declared that African Americans had no right to be respected by white individuals (Anderson, 2018). In other terms, black people were ranking the least in the racial and social order. However, things turned a little better when Abraham Lincoln passed an executive order, the Emancipation Proclamation, in January 1863, which set all African Americans, who were slaves, free. American society continues to segregate black people, even today.
Black women living in the USA encounters hair discrimination, which led to the implementation of Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act in July 2019. Specifically, a report by Dove, a soap brand, revealed that about 80% of black women were likely to change their hairstyles to meet the expectations or social norms at the workplace (McClay, 2019).
