Moses Williams, an African-American in 1777 in Philadelphia, was a painter of objects, animals, and people. They constituted black in a concrete shape of one color. Williams was a servant of artist Charles Willson Peale with whom he was living. Williams was the eighteenth child of Peale, who trained him in acquaintances that would assist him in working at Peale's museum. Some of Peale's principles stipulated that he would handle Willams as his child for the rest of his life despite being set at liberty at the age of twenty-seven (Shaw, 2005, p25). Williams did not go through a high-level training of his painting; hence, he was given a black palette while the other white Peale's household members were given a full palette of colors.
