Essay 1. Artist: Michelangelo, title: San Pietro in Vicoli. Date: 1545.
Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius della Rovere into building a tomb for Popes in five years. The tomb was to be surrounded by a 40 life-sized sculpture. The designed sculpture was to measure 7 meters wide, 11 meters deep, and 8 meters in height. It was to contain a funerary cell and a freestanding tomb (Frommel et al., 2016). This served as a profile of the Christian world. Its outline was for a man in the lower level, the prophets, and saints laid in the middle level, and the upper level was for transcending both levels during the Last Judgement. At the monument's summit, two angels guiding the Pope out of the tomb in the Last Judgment day were to be portrayed. However, the Pope could not find an appropriate place for erecting the tomb and thus planned for the restoration and remodeling of the Saint Peter's. He, therefore, ordered Michelangelo to organize for other commissions in Bologna and Rome for the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
