Introduction
Artificial foods are some of the major causes of health illnesses such as obesity. Most of the artificial foods are processed in the western countries, therefore, making it very dangerous for human consumption. Anyway, one should not confuse mechanically processed foods to chemically processed foods. Chemically processed ones are foods that have solely been made out of chemicals. For instance, buttercream is churned, and processed separated from milk but still has no chemicals put into it, making it safe for consumption. Artificial foods have both negative and positive impact on our daily lives.
Perspective 1: Positive ways
According to Laudan, artificial food is the way to go since it is human-made and produced by humans using art. He goes on to explain that even our ancestors back In their days had little interest in natural foods since they contained fewer calories for sustaining life, acquiring and digestion of the natural foods also seemed to be a problem (Lauden, 2018). So he argues that the introduction of artificial foods was just an improvement of nature and a cookery art that transforms the natural.
He also argues that the art of cookery has just been improvised to produce foods that are more nutritious, easily digestible, longer-lasting taste better compared to the raw plants and meat that our ancestors use to consume. It is because of these artificially produced foods that humans have experienced an increase in brain sizes which have helped the society evolve. For instance, humans have realized that barley grains can be used to make delicious beer if they are ell soaked and fermented.
Lum also argues that artificial foods help create a sense of confidence, especially to school kids. Majority of schools these days offer Lunchables which are easier to pack and even to consume. For instance, if one kid goes to school with natural greens as lunch and another gets to eat pizza provided by the school. The one with pizza lunch will be considered more cool compared to the other one with homemade greens which might lead to him feeling left out despite him consuming the more nutritional lunch.
Availability of artificial food, according to Lum, also helps the parents balance between preparing their kids for schools and feeding them. Most of the artificial foods come with an advantage in terms of storage and transportation (Lum, 2017). Most foods contain a lifespan of about one month meaning a parent can buy bacon for his kid and just put it in a fridge which could take his kid four weeks before he goes to the store for another one.
