The fifth unit of the book, Introduction Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, talks about the history and contemporary social movements of feminism. Feminism refers to the advocacy of the rights of women on the basis of equality of sexes. This chapter explains how feminism began in the United States and how it grew in several stages or phases. The chapter explains the growth of feminism into three phases that are popular: first-wave feminism, second-wave feminism, and third-wave feminism. The three phases will be explained below in accordance with chapter five of the book.
Advocacy for women’s rights began in the early 20th century in 1920 following women’s suffrage in the United States. This was due to discrimination of women in the workplace, which led to several feminist activists channeling their energy to demand women’s rights. This led to the formation of a federal agency known as the Women’s Bureau, which was to create policies in accordance with the women worker’s needs.
