Federalist Paper No. 23 Analysis

Utilizing the following quote as the title: “The authorities essential to the common defense are these: to raise armies; to build and equip fleets; to prescribe rules for the government of both; to direct their operations; to provide for their support. These powers ought to exist without limitation, because it is impossible to foresee or define the extent and variety of national exigencies, or the correspondent extent and variety of the means which may be necessary to satisfy them. The circumstances that endanger the safety of nations are infinite, and for this reason no constitutional shackles can wisely be imposed on the power to which the care of it is committed. This power ought to be coextensive with all the possible combinations of such circumstances; and ought to be under the direction of the same councils which are appointed to preside over the common defense.”-Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Paper No. 23

Federalist Paper No. 23 Analysis
Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist Paper No. 23 was one of the most interesting papers that were published in light of the push towards the creation of the United States Constitution to protect the nation. In his paper, he noted how important it is for the federal government and the individuals to work together in building a strong and undivided nation by building a strong army. In turn, he believed that the creation of a strong and resilient army through the almost unlimited authority vested in the government, could help the United States to withstand any future contingencies whether internal or external in nature. Accordingly, before further analysis must be made in the succeeding sections of this paper, it must be noted that the Federalist papers were written in news papers addressed to the statesmen of New York. In light of the subsequent ratification of the United States Constitution, it could be seen that the creation of the army was intended to serve as a deterrent towards outside aggression whether in the present or in the future.
This is exemplified by the United States’ policy in sending troops abroad in order to fight the enemies of liberty and democracy. Ever since the creation of the US Cons...
