After Democrat Joe Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 United States presidential election, defeated incumbent Republican Donald Crump alleged that there had been widespread voter fraud and tried to overturn the election. Trump called upon supporters to disrupt the joint session of Congress that had convened to count electoral votes and validate President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Trump’s followers violently attacked the United States Capitol in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021, by first besieging the building before eventually breaching it.
