This week, we conclude our discussions on digital media and public responsibility with one final section looking at what we think the future of this space and media infrastructure might look like. The various readings collected for this section try to tackle that question from a variety of angles, noting current issues and wondering what they look like in the future. For this journal, start by providing a critical synthesis of the readings for the week, including how you feel they relate to each other and what you feel the strengths and weaknesses are. Secondly, consider the following prompt: what do you think the future of our digital media landscapes will look like? What will be the biggest problems going forward? Will things be better, worse, or largely the same as they are now? Are you hopeful for our digital media future? Why or why not? Be sure to provide specifics in your answer. Media is a field that heavily relies on technology and its dynamism is attributed to technological changes evident throughout the years. Technological development does not only affect media, but also other areas of life. Many researchers agree on the level of influence that technology has had in our daily lives. While some authors perceive the changes as a move that should be wholesomely embraced, others warn of the impending risks associated with the technology.
Diana M. Bowman, Tim Berners-Lee, and Angela Benton are some of the prominent authors who have decried the need for care when dealing with the web. Bowman, in her article entitles The Future Will Grind On, addresses the readiness with which people embrace technology without evaluating the consequences of their actions. Diana argues that the unregulated technology is proving to be detrimental as people embrace it without taking any precautionary measures. Berners-Lee agrees with Bowman that the continual misuse of technology is risk for the world. On the contrary, Benton champions for inclusivity and equality in development of technology.
The main strength of these sources is that they base their assertions on facts and daily experiences, which makes the assertions made to be valid. Companies are using technology for their selfish gains without considering the effect of their actions on the common people. The weaknesses of the sources lies in the lack of concrete support for their assertions, which implies that the statements that the authors make are contestable.
