Response to Crafting Your Place in the New Global Work Space Discussion Panel
In November 2021, the Center for International Business Education Research at the George Washington University School of Business held a global careers panel and roundtable focusing on the modern changes in workspaces. The theme of the convention was Crafting Your Place in the New global Work Space. Their underlying issue is that the modern business world has changed and continues to change significantly. As a result, there is a need for current upcoming business employees, managers, and executives to understand these changes and adapt effectively to develop their portfolios (instead of careers).
Thus, the first key area is the need to shift from the idea that a person is developing or has chosen a career path to the perception that a person is developing a portfolio. The differences are that a career is linear while a portfolio is diversified. In essence, a portfolio allows an individual to specialize in many areas and develop many different skills necessary for navigating the modern business world. Apart from the differentiation between a portfolio and a career, the conversation has several other themes. These themes are shaped by the current changes that have a transformation effect on an individual's workplace.
The first theme is the role of technology because technology has impacted the way business communications and operations are carried out. The second theme is the development of a flexible mindset. In essence, modern business is drastically changing, and only a flexible mindset will allow people to adapt.
