The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the normal schedules of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Football League (NFL) because of the sudden countermeasures implemented by the federal and state governments to curb the spread of the virus. These measures led to a shift in game approaches, including playing without fans, while other sports became delayed for months before resuming. Such strict measures interrupted the mainstream sources of income for the leagues and clubs, triggering far-reaching impacts on their finances and the routine running of the enterprises.
COVID-19-related measures constricted the financial inflows of the NFL and MLB significantly. Projections by Contristano (2021) reveal that the two leagues could have earned approximately $10,796.58 for MLB and $7,578.54 for NFL under normal conditions in 2020.
