We discussed a case study on copying (or sharing) software. We also discussed sharing music and videos. Do you believe it is ethical or unethical to copy (or share) software under any circumstances? Software is any program generated with a computer; these applications have made our contemporary lives much simpler since they give fast-processing speeds that make work easier. These software developers invest a lot of work into developing them to do the duty that has been set for them. These developers deserve to be compensated for their efforts, which is why some software has a price tag attached to it, and only those who purchase it are permitted to use it. There are various ethics that should be observed when using the software. These ethics might be ambiguous because the use of such software varies significantly over time. In this article, we will discuss the ethics of keeping the software you have been given secure and how to use it correctly.
A subscription program can be used for the number of months or years you have opted to use it. Once the subscription period has ended, you can resubscribe to continue using the service. One ethical rule is that the person who obtains the product must use it for himself unless the program permits sharing; some software is freely available to the public, while others are not.
In this scenario, someone has asked you to share your software and know these ethical standards. It is evident that you will not share the program because you have purchased the rights to use it for a specific period, and sharing it would mean they would be the ones to gain from it. They claim the law is higher than everyone else, regardless of their social level, and ethics is a type of legal principle, which is why no one, regardless of their social class, has the right to distribute the software of others unless it is freely available to the public.
The type of software can significantly affect the situation because some software like games, for example, can be played freely without purchasing it, and some come with a price. Of course, free software can be shared, but exclusive software is only for buyers. According to the ethical fairness principle (Introna, 2007), decision-makers should emphasize actions that benefit others. This indicates that ethical decisions should be made in line with the law unless there are mitigating circumstances that may be justified, in which case ethical theory should be employed.
