Ron Christie, the guest in the class discussion, is a political strategist who has worked in the White House during the Bush administration and authored several books. He is currently a professor at Georgetown University, the founder of Christie Strategies, and the North American political analyst for BBC World. Patrick J. Egan, the host, is an associate professor of politics and public policy at New York University. The former identifies as a Republican while the latter identifies as a Democrat. Patrick J Egan believes that President Trump’s tendency to break from traditional norms inflicted permanent damage on the presidency and those institutions designed to check autocracy. Trump took unprecedented steps to undermine customs set by his predecessors by making bold assertions that undermined public confidence in civic institutions (Dimock and Gramlich). His propensity to use identity politics to advance his personal agenda tempered the resilience of the American political system and left a wake of perplexing and outrageous conduct by both Republican and Democrat politicians.
Egan posits that Trump’s unique brand of political theatrics may have destabilized the office of the president and toppled the limits of civil discourse. He asserts that Trump’s abrasive leadership styles and disregard for conventional norms of presidency and civil society may have made it more difficult to bridge differences between Americans and even ushered a new era of consistently uncompromising, hyperbolic, and defiant politicking. Ron Christie also believes that the post-Trump era is going to be polarized, disinformation, flat reversals, and constant bickering on social media channels.
