Egan, the host, is an associate professor of politics and public policy at New York University. The former identifies as a Republican while the latter identifies as a Democrat. Patrick J Egan believes that President Trump’s tendency to break from traditional norms inflicted permanent damage on the presidency and those institutions designed to check autocracy. Trump took unprecedented steps to undermine customs set by his predecessors by making bold assertions that undermined public confidence in civic institutions (Dimock and Gramlich). His propensity to use identity politics to advance his personal agenda tempered the resilience of the American political system and left a wake of perplexing and outrageous conduct by both Republican and Democrat politicians.
