My Observation of Prison Cells – Contrasting Realities
In this paper, I will share my hypothetical observation of two distinct types of prison cells. The first observation is based on a documentary titled "Inside a Texas Prison System," which allowed me to delve into the structure and ambiance of a Texas prison cell. The second observation draws from my experience as a former K-9 Patrol unit in the military, where I encountered short-term holding cells. Through this comparative study, I aim to provide a personal and vivid description of these prison cells, highlighting their unique characteristics and their impact on the prison system.
Observation 1: Texas Prison System
Stepping into the Texas prison, I was immediately enveloped by the monotonous beige walls. Although the interiors were well-lit, the high windows were out of reach, denying direct contact with the outside world. The warm touch of sunlight became an elusive luxury, attainable only through precise timing and strategic angles. The prison layout consisted of individual cells distributed across two levels, opening up to a shared common area known as pods. These pods served as a combination of living quarters and social spaces where inmates could interact with each other. Each cell, barely larger than 9x9 feet, housed two inmates.
As I entered one of these cells, I was drawn to the metal bunk beds bolted securely to the cold concrete floor. The bed frames were bare and uncomfortable, adorned only by thin mattresses and blankets that offered minimal respite. In one corner of the cell, a metal toilet and sink stood exposed without any privacy door or curtain, further emphasizing the lack of personal space and dignity. A couple of metal cabinets were bolted to the concrete walls, serving as the inmates' meager storage units for their belongings.
Venturing further into the cell, I experienced a sudden rush of claustrophobia as a large white metal door slid shut, locking me inside. The control over these doors rested solely with the guards, who opened them only in the morning before breakfast and promptly sealed them at 9 pm for the night, except for emergencies.
