TRANSPORT SYSTEM REPORT

 Write a report that assesses the transportation system of a city other than Buffalo with a comparable or larger metropolitan population size. City selections should be approved by the instructor in class or via email no later than March 11. The report length will vary for undergraduate and graduate students. GEO419 reports should consist of 4-8 pages of text, and GEO519 reports should consist of 6-10 pages of text. The main text of the report should be followed by references and an appendix with as many tables and figures as needed to support your assessment. The report is due via UBLearns by March 23 and should include the following:

1. Overview

  • Provide an overview of the city and its transport system.
    • Characterize how the population of the city and its surrounding metropolitan area is changing using information from sources such as U.S. Census data (see https://data.census.gov) and websites for city governments and news outlets.
    • Summarize the main passenger and freight modes of transport that operate in and around the city.
    • Describe how the city is situated relative to other locations (suburbs, other major cities, and the broader “hinterland” area) via land, water, and air transport networks.

2. Assessment

  • Critically evaluate how well the city’s current transportation system serves the social and economic needs of the populace who reside in its metropolitan area.
    • Identify strengths and weaknesses of the current transport system.
    • Discuss how to address problems identified with the urban transport system.
    • Locate parts of the metropolitan area that need better access to transport networks and discuss how they should be connected through the transport system.
  • Identify any lessons that Buffalo could learn from the city’s public transit system.

3. Recommendations

  • Provide recommendations for development of the transport system to meet a future surge in demand due to population growth.
    • Give specific recommendations for improving the current system and expanding it to accommodate a significant increase in the metropolitan population.
    • Specify what kind of investments in public transit options would be needed (e.g., light rail service, bus service) to accommodate the needs of a larger populace.
    • Indicate how safe pedestrian and bicycle access to urban amenities can be achieved through the enhanced transport system.
    • Discuss how to manage and mitigate the expected road traffic congestion.

Overview
New York is the densely populated city of the United States with a population of 18,823,000 in 2021, growing with a rate of 0.1% from 2020, and expected to increase as mentioned in appendix 1 (Macrotrends 1). Moreover, New York is situated in the largest natural harbor and comprised of five boroughs, including Taten Island, Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Based on the US Department of Commerce (1), New York is the 30th largest city by area and bordered by New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Additionally, NYCVB (1) highlighted that New York City (NYC) has a smart transportation system with complex infrastructure, including various passenger and freight modes of transport. The bus and railway system is inexpensive, smart, and environmental friendly that offers freight services to all five boroughs, and operates 24/7. Besides having the most extensive subway system, NYC further has Staten Island and a citywide expanded ferry system, yellow taxis network, and private car system.
Correspondingly, NYC is surrounded by the busiest airport and seaport routes in the US, which advances commercial activities in a particular city. Paving (3) report examined that Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Stewart Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport contribute dominantly to the airport system. On the other side, waterways and Ferry operated under the NY and New Jersey port system. The NY subway system’s emphasis is one of the largest transit networks, with 472 stations located from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens. The bus system operates in Nassau Section, New Jersey, and Westchester, whereas the expressways are connected with private transportation suburbs (NYCVB 1). With a massive transportation system, NYC actively manages the demands for the emerging population but needs improvement with the growing population, for which the research evaluates the gaps and proposes recommendations for the leading authorities.
Assessment
By overviewing the NYC transportation system, the region facilitated the thruways, highways, railroads, subways, parkways, expressways, air routes, and sea routes, connecting people with various other regions. With an extensive transit system, the transportation authorities effectively managed traffic issues within the city in past years. However, the underdevelopment, growing demand for sustainability, smart systems increasing population, and insufficient maintenance enlarge transportation crises that affected citizens’ economic and social needs (NYC 1). With growing impediments of the congested routes, population, flood issues, limited parking lanes, restrictive innovation, and sustainable solutions affect the city infrastructure. Henceforth, the regulators need to be responsive in adopting modern tactics to transportation issues.
