Crip camp started at Camp Jened in 1971, a New York summer camp. The camp was described as a free-spirited, loose camp for disabled teens. The film focuses on the activist for the disability rights movement. The camp was for teenagers with disabilities in the 1950s and 1970s. In the 1970s, teenagers living with disabilities opposed their future shaped by institutionalization, discrimination, and isolation. The film is about individuals fighting for the opportunity to live a normal life and contribute to society (Rak, 11). It’s an art piece that represents those who are shunned by society, fueled by a small group who realized that they had to fight for what they believe in.
