Introduction
In 1990, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) established a set of core competencies that each Nurse Practitioner must know and possess before graduating from NP school. In 2012, the core competencies were updated and applied to all nurse practitioners, regardless of their medical specialty. Although these competencies are mostly depicted in healthcare facilities, The Invisible Patient, a documentary, depicts how the core competencies can be used to change the lives of patients. The Invisible Patient also reveals the financial and emotional burden fashioned by the current healthcare system. This paper examines how leadership competencies, independent practice competencies, and health delivery system competencies are demonstrated in The Invisible Hand.
Leadership competencies
Strong leadership is essential in all types of work environments, especially those that involve informed decision-making. Likewise, NONPF emphasizes on the importance of leadership competencies by requiring NPs to advocate for better care and facilitate change. In The Invisible Patient, Jessica uses her leadership competencies to facilitate change that involves providing healthcare to people in their homes. Jessica drives on average 60 miles each day to care for Wink and Patty (an elderly couple), Roger, and Ron. Today, more than 1 in 5 Americans are caring for their disabled, ill, or elderly relative. This number is rising rapidly because approximately 10, 000 baby boomers turn 65 every day (Knickman and Shell, 2019). Therefore, just like Jessica, more NPs should use their leadership competencies to initiate change that address the increasing need for home care.
