Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that alters a person's ability to interpret reality normally since thinking, feeling, and behaving are affected (Arieti, 1971). John Nash, in the film 'A Beautiful Mind,' started suffering from the disorder in the 1950s when he was in his 30s. He began having signs of strange behavior, misinterpretation, and hallucinations. According to research, the mental condition remains asymptomatic for about six months, and medication can help in its remission. However, John was in his 50s when the condition improved without any medication (Rosenstock, 2003). The condition affects a person’s economic and social status. It becomes hard for them to work and socialize due to their weird behaviors, which they rarely note. Severe conditions can lead to suicide, anxiety disorder, depression, drug abuse, and suicidal thoughts. John's mood change was evident in his first-class when he was cheerful in introducing himself and suddenly got irritated by some students and left. Hallucinations were also evident when he thought that Parcher had taken out a gun to kill his wife after their baby almost drowned in water. He assumed that Charles was in the vicinity to watch the baby as he went out to seek something he had forgotten. Schizophrenia is a condition that one can easily note without a person's intrusion; hence self-awareness is necessary to identify causes of stress or mental illness.

Stigmatization due to schizophrenia is evident in the film through John Nash. Nash was initially an introverted and focused man while taking his studies at Princeton University, where he developed a game theory that opposed economic theories. John did not have any social cues. From the film, it is said that Alicia, his wife, noticed Nash distancing himself from the real world. After John noticed his condition, he barely left the house, giving his wife a hard task since they also a young daughter. Stigmatization would have probably affected him; though he was not a social person initially, the condition would have forced him to distance himself from people even more (Rosenstock, 2003). He also had a small circle of friends and social mates. Charles was his best friend and also his roommate. In the film, Nash is only seen associating with his wife, Alicia, and Charles, his best friend. Continued use of the medication prescribed to him would probably increase and lead to great stigma since he noticed that he did not think proper to advance his research. After John noticed his disability, he reduced his speech and expression of his emotions.
