1. The United Nations is an international organization formed by 51 countries worldwide after the occurrence of the Second World War. This organization abides by the Charter of the United Nations, which is the foundational treaty of the organization signed on the 26th of June 1945, stating its obligations and goals to the participating countries.
The principal organs of the United Nations are the following: Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Secretariat, International Court of Justice, Trusteeship Council. The General Assembly is the main policymaking and representative organ of the organization. This is the only body of the United Nations which is represented universally, with 193 state members, led by an elected president. An example of the role of the General Assembly is the decision-making regarding security or budget matters. The Security Council is the main organ for the maintenance of international peace and security, made up of 15 council members. An example of the role of this organ is determining and settling threats or dispute that is present in the most peaceful way but is also capable of allowing force if it will maintain peace and security. The Economic and Social Council is focused on socioeconomic and environmental issues, as well as the regulation of activities and sustainable development. The Secretariat is the Secretary-General along thousands of United Nations staff members carrying out every day administrative work for the whole organization. The members are recruited and placed in various duty stations all over the world to perform their part in the upkeep of the organization. The International Court of Justice is the primary judicial body of the United Nations, located in the Netherlands. The role of this organ is to settle any issues or disputes concerning legal international laws. Lastly, the Trusteeship Council is the body that provides international supervision. Its role is to guide the transition of a country from colonization to independence (“Main Organs”)
The United Nations are involved in global matters concerning the maintenance of peace and security worldwide, development of good relations among the nations that are included in the organization, encouragement of cooperation of countries in solving social, cultural, economic, or humanitarian international issues, and provision of a forum that can unite thee countries together to focus on the United Nation’s goals and purposes (“United Nations Headquarters”).
2. There are various progressions as the United Nations peacekeeping missions evolve from the First, Second, and Third Generation. The generations differ in various factors such as level and intensity of force used by the military, depth and type of tasks by the civilians, and sharing of the United Nations in the load of the regional organizations.
