There is a contention between free will and determinism. Although a person can indeed act freely according to their will to make them morally responsive, there are instances when causal laws control a person’s behavior (Ayer 271). As a result, these occurrences create a conflict between freedom and will. Scholars have debated the conflict between these two concepts. Some scholars believe they are incompatible, while others believe they are compatible. Even if these scholars hold opposing views on free will and determinism, the two concepts will remain incompatible.
Free will and determinism are incompatible and completely alike. These concepts have three significant differences, the person’s ability to decide, the agent, and the outcome. The ability to decide is the first distinction between the concepts. When viewed through free will, a person can decide and be responsible for the actions that will be taken; however, when viewed through determinism, a person cannot decide for the actions that will be taken. The second distinction is the agent of action. The agent of action of free will is the man himself; however, in determinism, another agent is responsible for the actions (Chisolm 126). Finally, the third distinction is the outcome. The result depends on the cause of the action. In addition, Chisolm believes holding a person accountable for an action does not make sense if an action has no cause. If a preceding event caused an action, a man could not also be held accountable for that action. A person is only accountable for the decisions created through free will.
