ETHNIC NEIGHBORHOOD VISIT REPORT
I decided to explore and write about the Africans in Philadelphia. About 7% of Philadelphia’s foreign population is made up of Africans. The African immigrant in Philadelphia is from almost all the African countries. However, many of these Africans in Philadelphia come from Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Liberia. For over three hundred years, Africans have found a home in Philadelphia – these include the Africans slaves who came to Philadelphia in the 17th and the 18th centuries as well as those who arrived during the Great Migration. The Great Migration occurred between the late 19th century and the 20th century. In the most previous years, Philadelphia has experienced a turnaround and is presently hosting persons from the African continent (Diemer, Andrew, et al., 1846). The new population comes from African directly. Precisely, the Greater Philadelphia hosts an average of 50,000 Africans. All these come from different African countries, and as such, they represent a rich variety of cultures, languages as well as religions. From the time the United States of America accepted refugees from Africa, that is about four decades ago, a number of them have been resettled in Philadelphia. Like I highlighted above, most African refugees in Philadelphia are from the Horn of African, that is, Ethiopia and Eritrea – most of who came to Philadelphia in the year 1980s. However, lately, immigrants from Somalia as well as Sudan have recently come to Philadelphia making the number of Africans from the Horn of African in Philadelphia high. Also, a considerable number of Africans in Philadelphia come from Liberia and Sierra Leone – both in Wes African. The population of Africans in Philadelphia can also be explained by the ‘family reunification’ (Diemer, Andrew, et al., 1835) provision.
