Guru Nanak Dev founded Sikhism in the 1500s. The person was born in Talwandi near Lahore in Pakistan in 1469 (“Traditions at a Glance” 3). During that time, Islam was the dominant religion in Punjab. Nanak derived his religious ideas from Islamic and Hindu doctrines. The individual was a spiritual thinker who came up with extraordinary poetry, which later turned out to be the Sikh scripture. Sikhism was established during the reign of the Mughal emperor Babur. Nanak used to meet with his followers in Kartarpur, where he spread janam sakhis, which were stories relating to his spiritual life. 
Nanak was a charismatic religious leader who attracted many disciples due to his good personality. Sikhism believers began to use Nanak’s hymns during their congregational worship. Currently, there are about 974 Nanak hymns that are preserved and recited by members of this religion worldwide (“Traditions at a Glance” 6).
