Respond to the following in a minimum of 200 words in MLA format and use at least one example from the required readings:
Here is a good example/text quote from the readings I would like for you to use:
“There is an elusiveness about poetry that makes it defy precise definition. It is not so much what it is that is important, as how it makes us feel.” (Kiefer,167)
Charlotte Huck’s Children’s Literature Second Edition
Kiefer, Barbara Zulandt, and Charlotte S. Huck. Charlotte Hucks Childrens Literature: a Brief Guide. McGraw-Hill, 2019.
Children’s poetry can stimulate a child’s imagination and have lasting influence on how a child views nature. Some of the earliest literature we learn as children is in the form of poetry.
In literature, the term canon refers to the most important works in a specific genre. They also refer to the works nearly everyone knows such as A visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Moore (1823, also called Twas the Night Before Christmas)
List two poems you believe should be included in the canon of children’s literature. Why did you make those choices?
What was your favorite childhood poem? Is it part of the canon of children’s poetry? What effect did this poem have on your imagination, views on nature or animals, or how you felt? Please use the poems “Little Miss Muffet” and “There was an old lady who lived in a shoe” by Mother Goose as the examples for this question. Don’t forget to cite these as well.
Does the way the poem is structured have any bearing on why it is your favorite from childhood? Why?
Ever heard of The Giving Tree, "A Boy Named Sue" or "The Unicorn Song?" These and soooo many more are by Shel Silverstein. Here is one of my favorite Children's Poems by Shel Silverstein. Here is a link to the Shel Silverstein website. If you don't know his poetry, please take a few minutes to read a couple of them here.
How do these modern poems compare to the ones from this week's readings?
Just an FYI- please do not cite Jack Zipes on any assignment for me as I have been advised by the professor that we will get a zero and reported for code of conduct violations if we use anything by Jack Zipes. I guess this guy wrote a book that's no longer in print anymore and people try to turn in old papers citing him.
