God in America: “The Soul of a Nation”
In episode five of God in America, “The Soul of a Nation” explores the decades following World War II, in which Billy Graham attempts to inspire a revival by combining by combining patriotism and faith to fight “godless communism.” Houses of worship were filled with multitudes of Christians, on the other hand, religious minorities and non-believers appealed to the Unites States Supreme Court, with the main intention of testing the constitutionality of religious expression in public schools. At that time, Martin Luther King, Jr. stood forth and called upon the nation to respect biblical teaching and honor the founders’ democratic standards.
America struggled with the relationship between politics and religion after World War II because that period saw politics and religion get closer and intertwined. In the fall of 1949, Billy Graham, an evangelist who in my opinion was the primary engine to America’s cold war Revival, facilitated the greatest revival in American culture. The rise of Billy Graham was the rise one would think of in relation to pop music stars. As evidenced in the episode, his ascendancy was similar to that of the Beatles which placed him in the perfect position to spread the gospel of faith. At that time, there was news regarding the success of the atomic bomb testing, which was a significant threat to America. With this news, Graham constructed a powerful religious sermon within the soviet threat, framing the cold war as a moral conflict.
