Nebuchadnezzar II
Nebuchadnezzar II, born in 630 BC, was the second king of Chaldean dynasty in Babylonia (Saggs). He is regarded as the greatest king of the dynasty and ruled from 604 BC to 562 BC (Nemet-Nejat 43). His military might and the splendor of city of Babylon, his capital made him the greatest king of the dynasty. He was Nabopolassar’s eldest son and eventually became his successor. According to Feinstein, his reign as Chaldean king earned him a reputation as both a destroyer and a builder (86).
In 601 BC, the Chaldean king advanced against Egypt (Nemet-Nejat 43). The result of the war was a loss for both sides and each retreated. The report of Babylonian casualties encouraged Judah to stop paying tribute to Babylon since it was an Egyptian ally. This angered King Nebuchadnezzar II and Judah soon became a province as a punishment (Nemet-Nejat 43). Also, some of its population were seized and taken to Babylon. When the Egyptians began attacking ancient Israel again, King Nebuchadnezzar sent a powerful army. As a result, the Egyptians retreated and Nebuchadnezzar II reclaimed many towns and besieged Jerusalem. Famine hit the city after eight months and eventually, the Babylonians managed to breach the walls. King Zedekiah was captured and his sons slain before his eyes. The city was destroyed as the walls were torn down and the palace and the temple set ablaze (Nemet-Nejat 43). It is deducible that Nebuchadnezzar II had a powerful army that helped him win battles against Egyptians and capture towns and cities.
