Reflection: Letter from a Birmingham Jail
“Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jnr is addressed to clergymen who in a statement had called his direct action “unwise and untimely”. The letter is fluently written and it defends his non-violence and civil-resistance explicitly. I find it comprehensive as it addressed significant issues that characterized segregation at the time. In his arguments, he makes reference to key figures in the American history including Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. King also uses Bible characters such as Jesus Christ, Paul, and Amos to back up his arguments in the letter. King puts forth invincible arguments against the racial injustice that black people were experiencing at the time. In the letter, King justifies his actions, responds to extremism accusations, and critiques the church’s attitude towards racial injustice. Personally, I cannot help but sympathize with the injustice prevalent at the time.
King eloquently justifies his actions, explaining to the clergymen why he chose direct action rather than “waiting”. King explains how Birmingham is one of the most segregated cities in the country. It is clear that King is well informed about the brutality and injustices that went on in Birmingham as well as other places inside and outside the United States. It is evident that King tries to open the eyes of the clergymen to see the injustices that necessitated a direct action. He explains how negotiations, which is favored by the clergymen, failed to address the segregation in the city.
