In this chapter, Peter Kreeft begins the book by exploring the current society and what it means to be virtuous in said society. Right from the start of the chapter, Kreeft questions the issues surrounding the apparent abandonment of virtue in the society and how it continues to affect the manner in which the society behaves (Kreeft 9-10). In essence, Kreeft makes the assertion that the abandonment of virtue is not entirely because the society seems to have given in to the whims of engaging in vices, but instead because the society is no longer in a position to categorically delineate between vice and virtue (Kreeft 9). In this way, it becomes much more difficult for the society, and for Christians in particular, to live a virtuous life because the systems in the society seem to have conflated vice and virtue, and this conflation has been equally effected in religious circles.
It is also worth noting that Kreeft makes it a point to highlight the reality that the world today is morally uneducated. In his argument, Kreeft points out the fact that in the current world, morality is not approached in the way of examining the roots of morality and their applicability in one’s life. Instead, morality is approached from a reasoning standpoint, and more so reasoning that is guided by feelings and individual calculations (Kreeft 13).
