In the presentation paper, there was a focus on determining the link between alcohol abuse and victimization using the incentives economic model. Alcohol abuse influences victimization. There is a tendency for law enforcement to impose harsher punishments to reduce offending, but economists also focus on the costs of such measures, laws, and policies. In the Economic Model of Crime, the benefit is money, while the costs are fines, incarceration, and risk. To evaluate the impact of MLDA the regression discontinuity was used for analysis.
The research was necessary to evaluate alcohol-related victimization when considering whether having the legal drinking age at 21 years explains patterns of victimization. The Minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) limits alcohol access, and possession to those 21 years old and above. An increase in alcohol consumption is associated with violent victimization, and as such, reducing drinking rates is one way to reduce victimization. Homicide, sex offenses, robbery, and assault are the parameters indicating violent victimization. On the other hand, the property victimization considered was burglary and larceny.
The effect of MDLA on alcohol-induced victimization also considered differences between the male and female participants. There are differences in drinking patterns and impact where there was a 7% increase in violent and property victimization when there was legal access among males. This was in contrast to females where legal access to alcohol was not associated with a risk of violent victimization. This indicated that the estimated effects were not sensitive to the order polynomials.
