Rawls proposed that the theory of justice can be reached based on what citizens would agree to accept unanimously, if they left aside their particular interests and own benefit and think in the "general interest or will. Rawls criticized utilitarianism which placed too much emphasis on maximizing satisfaction for the greatest number of people, as this in unfair because some people sacrifice particular interests.
