In Jeannette Wall’s The Glass Castle, Woody Harrelson plays the alcoholic, but fiercely intelligent Rex Walls, who ferociously flings his daughter into the deepest end of a pool. Rex is married to Rose Mary, and the two are struggling with poverty as they raise their four children. In despair, Rex is unable to deal with his troubles and decides to provide the tactics needed by his children to battle out their issues later in life. Jeannette, Rex’s daughter, finally gets out of the pool gasping for breath and runs away from the father. While Rex’s parenting philosophy of “sink or swim” is a lesson at the extreme, it works out for his daughter and the other children. The four children later become successful as they pursue different careers. Jeannette’s memoir is a lesson to those born into poor backgrounds and still struggling to pull themselves out (Arreola). While a study conducted by the Pew Charitable Trusts in 2013 indicated that only 4% of individuals born into poverty finally make it in life leading comfortable middle-class lifestyle, it is highly possible for persons born into extreme poverty to pull themselves out (Tastic).
Success is never inherited nor is it easy and the odds are not in favor of anyone (Tastic). Because one is born into a low-income family, some say that victim mentality keeps on sinking such people into abject poverty. However, many successful entrepreneurs in American history were children of poor parents but later made it in life managing big companies. For instance, the late Steve Jobs, the former Apple CEO was given up for adoption, but the parents could not afford college tuition (Telegraph.co.uk). He had to drop out of college to co-found Apple with his friend Steve Wozniak. All is needed if forward-thinking mentality, creativity and an incessant desire to discover and learn.
