Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City
In the United States, poverty has become a significant threat. It is a state of deprivation in which people lack both money and food. The U.S. government has set some standards to measure and recognize the rate of poverty, and it is said that thousands of people are living a miserable life. Many of them are homeless, while the others are unemployed with no food to eat and no availability of healthcare facilities. In his book titled Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, Matthew Desmond presents the same idea in an entirely different and impressive way.
As its name suggests, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City clarifies how eviction creates problems for a large number of Americans and how poverty impacts their lives in one way or the other (Desmond, 2017). After reading this book, I got to know that eviction and poverty are two of the main consequences of today’s world. A person who is afraid of losing his money, property and everything, is likely to develop stress, anxiety, depression and other psychological disorders. When he is thrown out of his own house, some negative thoughts originate in his mind. According to the author, home is where a person or a family feels safe and secure, and no one in the society has a right to evict them unnecessarily.
