The portrayal of wickedness in fairy tales is integral to narrative structure and it also mirrors wickedness in real life. Root causes of evil are multifaceted and have influence over a variety of elements within fairy tales. Villains and evil within fairy tales often function as a means to deliver moral lessons.  

  • What is the value of wickedness in fairy tales? Do the lessons imparted by wickedness apply only to children or to adults as well? Use examples to support your discussion. 
  • Does the quality and meaning of evil change as we mature? How do we view fairy tale villains as children as opposed to as adults? Is the difference important? Why or why not?
