The article by Golden, Henly, and Lambert (2013) focuses on the variables that affect happiness by analyzing the independent role of having a choice to decide one’s working hours and relies on a national US survey. The authors suggest that flexible working hours, which rely on employee discretion or input, result in increased performance in comparison to the traditional schedules that occurred for fixed hours. The ability to determine when to quit and starting times daily, and also take time off while on a workday, are linked to higher levels of happiness.
Workers who have on-call or irregular shifts when compared to having a daytime shift report lower levels of happiness. This suggests that workers who are forced to work using unpredictable work schedules or hours undergo adverse wellbeing effects (Golden, Henly, and Lambert 109). The hourly payment schedule also encourages employees to gauge their happiness based on the amount of income, even though the income impacts are reduced if job discretion is used in the models. The authors reveal that practices and policies which support flexible working hours can reduce work-life time problems and also improves the workers' wellbeing, particularly employees who are paid hourly.
Theory
A theory from the article that would influence my future profession is the view that the flexibility of the work schedule over time results in improved employee wellbeing, including happiness. As a manager or supervisor in the future, I would consider the employees' work schedules and the best way to ensure that they work optimally, for instance, I would consider applying schedule discretion among employees who associate their earnings with the working hours.
