Case 13: Walt Disney - Creating Happiness through Motivation
An organization is doing something correctly if both employee and customer are happy. Research shows that there is a strong connection between employee engagement and motivation with customer experience and satisfaction (Cloutier and Pfeiffer 317). Walt Disney believes that the strong bond between workers and customers is crucial for the business growth and it is possible by delivering a positive customer experience by putting the employees first. Employees play a very important role in branding and customer experience as they will help in improving autonomy, skill variety and task identity while delivering the better business outcomes and feedback (Pradhan et al. 53-62).
In the today’s global economy, where the competition increases rapidly to stand apart from the competitors; the biggest opportunity for the organization would be its ability to deliver incomparable customer experience. Employee engagement, customer experience and satisfaction are always a win-win situation as it improves the performance resulting in high motivation which increases the ability and thus creating a better work-environment (Bauer, Erdogan and Short 397-459). There are some strategic reasons that Walt Disney can adopt for creating a positive customer experience through employee engagement. It is possible by aligning individual, team, and organizational goals while giving people a purpose not the rules, putting the spotlight on their people, tapping into their creativity and creating a happy consequence (Smith 19-20). The philosophy of Disney is to ensure that the objectives of the team must be aligned with the organizations by creating incomparable happiness for their guests.
If I was a manager at Walt Disney, I would apply effective ways to create happiness for employees by giving them self-esteem, self-actualization and providing physiological needs while celebrating personal and team achievements, sense of belonging and love, safety and security, courtesy and thanks.
