Le Guin's The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
           Learning the circumstances surrounding any literary piece is vital for the proper appreciation of any literary piece. It allows for a clearer view of the underlying reasons of the author. Accordingly, this paper will focus on Ursula Le Guin's The Ones Who Walk Away from the Omelas and the idea of utopia as found through the human condition. A particular focus would be given to how Le Guin portrayed the idea of utopia in a negative light. All in all, I believe that Le Guin aimed to depict the harsh reality that a utopian state is not really a perfect place but rather one that is founded upon the sufferings and sacrifices of others. 
Le Guin's Utopia
           The concept of utopia has always been characterized by the idea of wealth, prosperity, and happiness. These characteristics were also portrayed in Le Guin's piece as early as the beginning when the author described the Festival of Summer. Mainly, it is noticeable that the first few paragraphs of her piece focused on showing the elegance, grandeur, and festivities in Omelas, such as the rigging of the flags, the young ones playing with their horses, the banners in the sea, and even "the white-gold fire across the miles of sunlit air." Through these first few paragraphs, she can entice her readers into imagining an ideal place. 
           Subsequently, however, Le Guin introduced the underlying problem in Omelas, which is that all of the city's happiness and wealth is based on one child's suffering. Notice that s...
