Realist and National Movements
The period 1865 to 1912 resulted in various social upheavals, such as the assimilation of immigrants and recovery from the Civil War. The majority of immigrants hailed from Western and Northern Europe. During the 1840s, almost half of the immigrants living in the United States originated from Ireland. However, a significant number of immigrants were Asians. The influx of immigrants into the United States caused riots from a fraction of native-born citizens, such as Anglo-Saxon Protestants. According to Gajarawala, Americans perceived immigration as a form of competition for available jobs (p.64). In 1870, the United States experienced political instability, which contributed to a slowdown of the migration. Realism and naturalism were the main movements that took place in the United States.
