An Unforgettable Camping Experience with Family on Lake Michigan: A Memoir

Essay Instructions:

After you have completed the readings about writing a memoir, you are to write a memoir of your own. Pick one moment in you life. Do not pick a long period of time (1 year, 9 months, etc.). Keep it short - one day, an afternoon, 1 hour. The longer the period of time, the less room for details. Do not get carried away with details (the azure sky lit up the fluffy white clouds making them look like the marshmallows I loved as a child). On the other hand, a lack of discriptive detail will keep the reader from engaging (I walked into the room and sat on a chair).

An Unforgettable Camping Experience with my Family on Lake Michigan
It was a cool late afternoon in the month of July, the white clouds above were scattered akin to cotton balls that had been torn apart. The sun shone brilliantly in the centre of the light blue skies. Our 7-seater van driven by my dad emerged into the somewhat forested region adjacent to Lake Michigan filled with other campers. I was captivated by the whiff of campfire smoke which had blurred the camping ground. Rays from the brilliant yellow sun crept in through the green, leafy and lofty trees onto the sand below my feet. I realized that this new place is really going to be a place of excitement and escapade.
For obvious reasons, our camper had to be set up. My father and I worked together in putting it up as the others examined the area. I was a bit turned off by this task since I wanted to go out there and explore the woods, see the lake. We completed the set up in what felt like eternity. Afterwards, I was eager to get out there and look around at what was there to see. I asked my little 8-year-old brother, “Hey Martin, would you like to come explore this new place with me?” “Yea, of course I would!” he answered back excitedly. The other family members had listened in on our conversation and decided to follow us. My father, mother, and the other siblings began wandering up the sand dune located at the back of our campsite. The sand on the dune below our feet was hot thanks to the sun’s intense heat.
The sound of Lake Michigan’s waves crashing on the shoreline increased with every step as we marched up the sand dune. We marched a few more feet and beheld, there it was Lake Michigan. The sight from the top of the sand dune was awe-...
