If you would ask me to name one aspect of life that is very common yet overly complicated, I’d say marriage. Marriage is one of the things that almost any individual would go through, whether once, twice, or even more, due to our belief that two human beings must enter into a (legal) agreement that they will support and stay faithful to each other. However, what makes this seemingly trivial thing complicated is the fact that most humans experience times wherein we feel the urge to find another and fail to resist it, thereby resulting in conflict, separation, or even divorce between wedded partners. In this article, I would like to show that despite our impulsivity as members of the Millennial generation, our infidelity is also lesser than those who came before us. I would provide several ideas presented in Khazan’s article entitled Do Married Millenials Cheat on Each Other[?], such as those related to ideas of technology, professionalism, and changing social norms. All in all, I believe that partners who belong to our generation are less likely to cheat on one another because of sociological and technological developments that help us make better options and deter us from going against them.
Why are we Less Likely to Cheat?
One of the main reasons we are less likely to cheat is because of social media. Compared to previous generations, the existence of social media did not only improve our communicative ability by leaps and bounds but also made it easier to publicize one wrongdoing to millions, if not billions, of people. This shows that before social media, cheating against his spouse or partner is easier since an individual is less afraid of being discovered or its social implications than today, wherein one single photo could ruin an individual’s relationship.
