Understanding of The Novel Candide by Voltaire
Candide is one of the best-known works of Voltaire, published in the year 1759. In the beginning, Candide is educated by his trainer Pangloss on being optimistic. Pangloss claims that “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.” [1] We later see Candide being thrown out of the castle in which he was brought up. After that, so many challenges follow Candide and his confidants along the way. Such disasters were; earthquakes, rape, war, and even slavery.[50] These destitutions ravaged all possible optimistic teachings that Candide had acquired. However, he and his allies portray a rather different scenario, whereby they give themselves hope to surpass all odds.
One observation that got my attention is that Candide, despite being raised like a king, renders him an empathetic and simple person. He is also sincere and of a kind heart. How? In the novel, we see where he gives money to unfamiliar people like Giroflee and the poor king.[54] He also honors the devo...
