The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution
The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are the most significant documents in American history. The event was key in ending ties with the British colonial government and instituting self-governance. At the same time, the Constitution set up a free and fair independent government for the American colonies. Both documents provided the foundation for modern American democracy.
Initially, the majority of the American colonies favored British rule. Any individual who attempted to resist their rule was considered radical. However, the movement against British rule grew in 1775, which led to Britain’s powerful army attempting to crush all rebellious factions. During 1775, at the height of the Revolutionary war, the American colonies were determined to gain independence from Great Britain. The issue reached the Continental Congress and was subjected to a vote. As a result, a committee led by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams was created to craft an official statement that declared the colonies' intent for independence. Jefferson was the major writer of this official document. The congress approved this statement on July 4 1776. It marked the official departure of the 13 American colonies from British rule. During the congress vote, all the colonies approved, except for New York, which abstained (Tsesis). This draft came to be known as The Declaration of Independence, and it put forth American colonies' desire for self-rule.
