To make the reader understand the importance of research, even when it comes to purchasing. When buying an item such as a computer, one needs to be very careful about how they approach the purchase. They need to do a little bit of research on various types of computers and then proceed to buy one.
The extended example implies that sourcing and research are essential to any goal one sets their minds to. If you want to achieve something, you need all the necessary information to achieve it. You cannot venture into something blindly. Sourcing ad research gives you an upper hand.
How does the chapter talk about research as allowing you to enter into a community of other academics at the college level?
The chapter includes examples of individuals within the community of academics who use research to answer their scholarly questions. Based on these examples (history professors, physicians in medical school, and graduate students studying physics), one understands that you become a part of the academic community by using research.

Primary research is research that is conducted first hand. Secondary research is the type of research that involves extracting information from existing sources. One example of when I would like to use primary research is when I investigate the number of students on campus who support the current government.
