Sympathy for Macbeth
Macbeth is the protagonist of the play. He has a defect in his character, which is his ambition. He possesses one commendable quality; when the play opens, various individuals describe him noble. And, his wife persuades or tempts him to commit a callous act. By describing him as good, Shakespeare makes it feasible for the reader to feel sympathy for Macbeth. Aristotle, ancient philosopher, and scientist believed that a tragic hero could not be all bad – the hero must possess both good and bad qualities. He also believed that it is essential for the audience to sympathize with the tragic hero.
In Act 1, we are introduced to Macbeth – a martial hero who deserves all the rewards and praises showered upon him. He is described in phrases such as “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won” (1, 2, 67), “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!” (1, 2, 24), and “For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name” (1, 2, 16). He is depicted as a loyal and valiant combatant who fights fervently for his Country and his King. His ambition is his only flaw. After the witches prophesy that he will soon be Thane of Cawdor and later be crownedKing, he is filled with unbelief. But, when he actually becomes Thane of Cawdor, it becomes impossible for him to disregard the prophecy as the goal that seemed unattainable was suddenly in his grasp.
