Introduction
Dramatic tragedy occurs when a character with a great or significant role in a story or play commits a fatal flaw which results in a downfall. Tragedy, as used in William Shakespeare Macbeth’s play, indicates how negative characters of an individual can result in subsequent distress and wow of the other characters (Booker, 2004. P.156). Macbeth is a character featured to contribute to the anguish of other characters in the play through his ruthless threats in his desire for power. This paper defines the role of Macbeth in the play as a tragic hero whose action resulted in tragic downfall for him and his family as well as pain for other characters.
In Macbeth’s play, Shakespeare has presented Macbeth as a tragic hero who endures the pain of his negative actions and desire for power. In this case, tragedy is presented as a situation whereby an individual encounters bad experiences as a payback of negative deeds for others. A tragic hero is a person with high reputation or well recognized in the society who ends up experiencing a tragic fall due to a negative attitude and misuse of the position of leadership (Bernad, 1962. P.47). Macbeth is used as a good example of a tragic hero, who had a great title in the kingdom but was led by leadership and power desires thus ending up killing the king in order to take his position. Even after becoming a king, he ended up experiencing fatal downfall with his wife committing suicide and he eventually died.
The tragedy of Macbeth arrives as he presented his weaknesses of believing the witches and the conviction of his wife to follow the false prophesies which led him to commit murder to the king and many others who would have opposed his desire of becoming a king. King Duncan honored and trusted Macbeth, but Macbeth ended up killing him in order to take the position of the king. The killing of King Duncan was followed by subsequent tragedies of violence and killing of innocent people that surrounded the king as they would have hindered Macbeth’s desires (Shakespeare, scene five). After all, efforts made, Macbeth managed to become the king which forced the sons of the killed king Duncan to flee from the kingdom.
However, it is believed that no sin goes unpunished. The desired and power-hungry king Macbeth thought that he had achieved everything and no man would reach him in the thrown. However, tragedies followed him and his family and friends which resulted in a massive downfall. For inst...
