Women on Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar
The Bell Jar outlines the life of Esther, who gets a month-long summer internship in New York City. Her stay in New York is not as easy as she thought since she is struggling with identity and social issues. She meets two friends who have a different opinion other than what she believes about feminism. Esther is denied an entry to a writing class and therefore, this forces her to spend the rest of the summer with her mother. She tries to focus on her career by writing a novel that is compelled by suicidal thoughts. She finds it difficult to manage all that is happening in her life and at some point, she attempts committing suicide through an overdose of sleeping pills. Through the various experiences that she goes through during her internship, Esther loses her virginity, an act which she considers a great milestone in her life. She is later taken to a mental hospital whereby she is treated by a psychiatrist who encourages her to get a diaphragm. She begins to hemorrhage and one of the patients, Joan, takes her to the emergency room. Shortly, Joan commits suicide hence reflecting esters thoughts. Esther is also set to face the examination board which will decide whether she can go home. Therefore, this book is interesting since it reflects the life of women in America during the 1950s.
The book reflects the struggle that women were going through in order to fit in male-dominated society. Esther reflects on the anger that she felt when her boyfriend claimed to have been seduced hence the reason as to why he was not a virgin. He was blaming his sexual encounter to women instead of accepting that he was part of the ordeal. Esther is a strong woman who believes that she might try her level best in order to achieve her dreams. However, in the male-dominated society, she faces plenty of challenges which pushes her into attempting to commit suicide.
