Going to Meet the Man
The short story begins with a scene in the bedroom of Grace and Jesse, who is a local sheriff. Jesse is unable to perform sexual relations, but his wife does not seem to insist on it. “You’ve been working too hard” (Baldwin 1750). Grace tells Jesse that she understands that he had a stressful day and asks him to go and have a good sleep because he was going to have a stressful day the following day. But on the contrary, Jesse can't sleep, and all he is thinking about is another black girl that he had met. He thinks of how the girl would do anything for him, but he could not ask his wife to do such favors for him.
