Friday’s reading and quiz cover chapters I through IX in The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. This slave narrative containing lots of details. Two quizzes on the autobiography will be timed, so it is important to begin reading it as soon as possible. (These quizzes may not be made up, regardless of the excuse.)

The authors of slave narratives have been publishing under pseudonyms because their childhood life involved slavery. For example, Harriet Jacobs experienced many incidents of slavery as a girl. The incidents made her published articles under the pseudonym (which is currently recognized as American Classic).
* What narrative technique does Douglass use to underscore his belief that he has human rights to be free?
Douglass uses rhetorical devices to underscore his belief that he has human rights to be free. The first device is ethos. He appeals to the audience by beginning his speech with humility and showering praises to the founding fathers. Another device is pathos. He appeals to the emotions and beliefs of the listeners. There is pathos in Douglass’ speech, which is full of brimstone and fire. The pathos raises the emotions of the audience. The last rhetorical device is logos. Douglass applies logos to appeal to the logic of his argument that he has the right to be free from slavery. He reveals his wide vast of American legal situation, political scene, passed and passing of proposed laws, and legal arguments of opponents.
