Topic 3: What were the three basic plans for Reconstruction? What were some successful aspects of Reconstruction and what were some that were never actualized or that eventually failed? Why did Reconstruction end by 1877, before the goals of the Radical Republicans were accomplished?

One of the activities that resulted in Abraham Lincoln’s legacy of being the greatest United States (U.S.) president is the emancipation of slaves. During his time, Lincoln was willing to pass a law that was not favored by many Americans. However, Lincoln’s ability to recognize that all humans are equal, and, therefore, should not be forced to serve, was one of the things that defined him as an individual and as a leader. To this date, the Slave Emancipation Act is still considered one of the greatest achievements in U.S. history (Goethals and McDowell 17). Another activity that defined Lincoln’s legacy was the reconstruction. During Lincoln’s presidency, America was divided into two. The main reason for the division was slavery. Lincoln understood that slavery had to end. However, as a politician, he also used the hot button issue to reconstruct America. For confederate states to be readmitted to the U.S., they had to agree to the abolishment of slavery (Goethals and McDowell 53).

One of the controversies of Lincoln’s presidency also involved his stand against slavery. Although Lincoln’s objection to slavery was supported by Americans in the northern part of the country, it was resented by southerners. Many Americans in the south went to the extent of faking stories about crimes committed by African Americans in an attempt to challenge Lincoln’s position on slavery (Parry-Giles and Kaufer 34). Even in his death, Lincoln was still resented by a majority of southerners for emancipating slaves. Another controversy in Lincoln’s presidency was the killing of 38 Native Americans by his order. Although this act was only received negatively by Native Americans at the time, today, it is considered one of Lincoln’s greatest mistakes.
