Sexual Harassment
In the 1950s, sexism, gender discrimination, and culture of oppression of the female students, was a critical matter in many colleges in the United States. In the novel by Paule Marshall, she describes the experiences that college women go through, more so with their tutors, in their journey attaining academic qualifications. The black race was the informal group was more exposed to sexual harassment such as the case of Ms. Williams and the author of “Brooklyn” (Marshall 39). I believe women are more vulnerable to sexual harassment than men in societies dominated by male leaders or teachers as in the context of the story. For instance, Ms. Williams has to sacrifice her sexual desire for Max Berman to pass her French literature exams. She agrees to visit Berman`s for the last time to expose his heinous acts of sexually harassing the female students in the college.
In effort to curb the scourge of sexual harassment that is still rampant in many colleges, institutions and organizations, it is important to consider its causes. I feel that in doing so we may end the vile act once and for all. The popular two sides of the coin should be both considered and attended to since sexual harassment is not one sided or like a disease that one wakes up with. After critical analysis, it would appear that before a person engages in the act, there are some stimuli that propel him.
