School Uniforms: A Good Policy
Wearing a school uniform may not be everyone’s favorite outfit, but it should not be taken away because it gives pride, creates an identity for the school and it is a crucial part of a student’s life. Uniforms let people know that a person is part of an organization and having it on gives a message of unity and school spirit.
According to the National Survey 2013, having a uniform has a good impact on classroom discipline (85%), community image (83%), student safety (79%), school pride (77%), the student’s achievement (64%), and attendance (44%). Furthermore, principals are accountable for keeping a safe and positive school environment and tradition.
Mary Vallance, who is an 18-year old student states that: “I like uniforms because everyone is the same and no one can be left out by the way they are dressed. Our new uniform looks smarter, and that’s important.” (2013)
Wearing a school uniform is better for the security of students because if the staff and kids have their uniform on, it will be difficult for a stranger to blend in because people will immediately know he or she is an outsider. Based on Dreilinger, with schools requiring uniforms, parents easily become accustomed to paying the tuition fee and know where their money is going (2013). Even if it costs more, the uniforms are usually made with high-quality materials and parents know it will last so they do not mind the extra cost.
