Russia had been under the rule of despotic czars for a long time. However, in the early 1900s, peasant revolutions began arising to detest the oppressive rule. In the early 20th century, the Bolsheviks seized power from the despotic czars ending the imperial rule that had lasted for over 1000 years. The fall of the czars was facilitated by the collapse of the Russian government, its military, and economy during World War 1. The collapse gave Vladimir Lenin, the Bolveshivick leader, to seize power and establish the Soviet Union.
